A comprehensive A-Z of business was published recently.
Thousands of pages long, it covered every subject imaginable in
the business lexicon. Every subject except one:
SALES
....
This, it seems, is a typical example of what one of our members
calls the 'school dance problem':
"Our approach to sales is just like the
school dance
. everyone lines up on the opposite side of the
room and are put off approaching the other through fear of rejection
"
Directly or indirectly, most of us invest heavily in selling our
services and products. However, for many selling has traditionally
been regarded as something of a 'black art'. Like asking for a dance,
it is too often avoided in favour of more 'comfortable' subjects,
and / or left to others who (supposedly) know more than we do
More positively, in a tougher environment, our members are increasingly
acknowledging that to survive and grow the smallest and newest must
compete head-on with the largest and most established to win and
retain business. It is clear that 'school dance' reticence will
only handicap us, so we must learn to sell our services more assertively
and professionally.
The IoD Kent Sales Forum
This event has been designed to help IoD members with this pivotal
business challenge. It provides an informal and supportive environment
to exchange ideas, views and experiences on every aspect of sales.
Facilitated by branch member Steve Jessop, an experienced sales
practitioner, and co-founding director of Quantum, one of the UK's
leading sales improvement consultancies, the Forum meets on a bi-monthly
basis for 1.5 hours at breakfast-time at IoD Kent's offices in West
Malling.
Between 08.30 and 10.00 on 14th April we debated this very subject:
The school dance dilemma. Is it true? Are
we just not cut out to sell?
If there is truth in this - what should we
do about it?
Previous forums have helped many participants to focus on the sales
issues most relevant to their businesses
